Adi Putra, who is supposed to attend his fourth standard class has now become CEO for two companies and a lecturer.

The Perak-born child genius, was quoted as saying that he wanted to be a lecturer in Islamic studies.

Serihana her Mother, operates the two companies, which sells vitamins under the brand Adi.

Serihana said he keeps track of foreign stock markets via the Internet and studies at home and not intered to go to school.

“He’s interested in mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography and biology, but not so much in history and politics. He dislikes reading books but loves spending his time browsing the Net for study materials,” the Star Online quoted Serihana as saying.

A whopping Rs 2 billion ($41 million) is said to be riding on that question, as bookies pitch for the rags-to-riches drama, setting off a new betting trend here.

The Oscar awards ceremony is on February 22, and the film set in Mumbai has 10 nominations. This includes three entries for AR Rahman’s background score, and two songs – all clear favourites with the bookies.

-This is yet another new trend picking up in Indian betting circles, apart from betting on cricket. This will probably be the first time when both bookies and punters are placing bets on the Oscars

-Many of the punters who used to bet on cricket largely are now discussing Slumdog Millionaire’s chances of winning. But the number of punters and bookies is still low, as people are not aware of where to bet and how to bet.

Rahman has been nominated for Best Original Score and his songs Jai Ho and O Saaya are also up for the Best Original Song for a motion picture. “Punters are crazy about Rahman. The reason behind placing bets on Rahman could be his high status in Bollywood. The Indian connection to the movie also makes it a favourite among the punters,” said a punter.

Rupee looses its strength

The rupee weakened in early trade on Tuesday as oil refiners stepped up their month-end dollar buying, but expectations of a stronger stock market opening may stem a sharp decline.

Foreign funds have dumped $13.3 billion worth of Indian shares so far in 2008, after buying a record $17.4 billion last year. But they’ve bought $365.6 million worth of shares so far in December.

Oil prices were above $40 a barrel on Tuesday. Refiners are the largest buyers of dollars in the domestic currency market and demand tends to peak at the end of each month when they make payments for their imports.

The dollar dropped against the euro and the Swiss franc on Tuesday, as tensions in the Middle East, which threaten oil supplies, continued to weigh.

India ranks fourth in internet usage

India has been ranked fourth among the top ten nations in the world with 81 million internet users even as the world aggregate touched 134,85,72,040 by the end of 2007.

United States leads the chart with 220 million Internet users followed by China (210 million) and Japan (88.1 million).

Brazil comes next to India with 53.1 million users, UK 40.2 million, Germany 39.1 million, Republic of Korea 35.5 million, Italy 32 million and France 31.5 million.

The Internet Governance Forum has released these statistics on the eve of its third four-day global conference that begins at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre on December 3.

From about 70 million people (1.7 per cent of the world population) who had access to the Internet at the end of 2007, the figure crossed 134.8 crore by 2007. Asia has the highest number of Internet users with an estimated 568.7 million people followed by the Americas with 377.9 million.

Europe ranks third in this list with 335.9 million users and Africa and Oceania close the rank with 51.8 million and 14 million users respectively, according to the IGF.

India, however, does not find place among the top ten nations in terms of broadband connections where too the US stands first with 73.2 million connections.

China has 66.4 million, Japan 28.28 million, Germany 19.6 million, UK 15.6 million, France 15.5 million, Republic of Korea 14. 7 million, Italy 10.8 million, Canada 9 million and Spain 8 million broadband connections.

After Taj Attack

However, the 5 star premium hotels will no longer entertain ‘walk-in-guests’ (without references or pre-bookings) and have scaled up the number of armed guards, sniffer dogs, x-ray machines and metal detectors right at their entrance. In fact, some of them have stopped car parks within their premises.

Sources say that as a part of its strategy, the Tata group may up room rates of its Cuffe Parade-based Taj President. Room rates for the Taj President were lower by 10-15% as compared to Taj Lands End and Taj Palace. ”Now the group may consider upping the room rates and try to transfer much of its business to the Taj President and the Lands End, “sources said.

The winter season, between October and February, is considered to be the most important season for the industry. Hotel consultants had already lowered growth projections for foreign footfalls in the country, and it was expected to grow by just about 6-7% compared with last year.
